Wayne State University President Jay Noren has announced his resignation, effective Aug. 6. Noren, who took the position two years ago, said "personal issues during this past year have become increasingly important and have resulted in my decision to resign from the presidency," according to a statement. Phyllis Vroom, dean of WSU's School of Social Work and acting provost, will be acting president pending the board's appointment of an interim president. Richard Bernstein, chair of Wayne State's Board of Governors, said in a statement that Noren "brought a wealth of energy and experience to the university…The university community thanks Noren for his service, but fully understands his decision to step down. We wish Jay and Sheri the very best." Noren said in a statement, "It has been a pleasure to serve the university during such a challenging and important time in its history. And I believe WSU is continuing on a path to realize its major potential as one of the nation\'s leading urban research universities. I am confident in Wayne State\'s direction, its leadership, and most of all its people, and look forward to watching its progress in the years ahead."
